<< South Italy
Abruzzo is a region of Italy located along the Adriatic coast of the country. Despite being geographically in the center of Italy, it is regarded as a southern region for historical, cultural, and linguistic reasons. Most of the region is mountainous, and features the tallest mountains of the Apennines. Anciently inhabited by various Italic peoples, the region was later conquered by the Romans. After being ruled by the Byzantines and the Lombards, Abruzzo was taken by the Normans and became a part of the Kingdom of Sicily and then the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and was thus linked to Southern Italy for centuries. After the Italian unification, Abruzzo was part of the region Abruzzi e Molise, before Molise was separated to become its own region. Abruzzo is now a popular tourist destination mostly thanks to its beautiful natural environment. A large portion of Abruzzo is protected as part of parks and natural reserves, and the region houses a rich flora and fauna.
