Enna
Enna is a town in central Sicily, and the highest provincial capital in Italy, being located at an altitude of over 900 meters. Founded in prehistoric times, Enna became an important center under the Greeks and Romans, and remained a relevant town throughout its history. Known for centuries as Castrogiovanni, the city retook its ancient name of Enna in 1927. The city is now famous for its castle and a few other historic sites.
✪ Lombardy Castle
The Lombardy Castle (Castello di Lombardia) is an imposing fortress located at the highest point of Enna, and one of the largest medieval castles in Italy. This place was fortified in ancient times, while the current structure was erected by the Normans in the 12th century, and in the Late Middle Ages it was one of the most famous and important castles in Italy. After being used as a prison, it was turned into a tourist attraction in the 20th century, and it is now the main landmark of Enna. The castle features various well preserved fortifications. Next to the castle is the Rocca di Cerere, a rock formation that once hosted an ancient temple. A small museum of local history is located nearby.

Enna Cathedral
The Enna Cathedral (Duomo di Enna) is the main church of the city. Frederick II Tower

Piazza Armerina

Villa Romana del Casale is a large Roman palace located in the countryside southwest of Piazza Armerina. The luxurious villa was built in the 4th century and was later fortified. Abandoned in the 12th century, it was rediscovered in the 20th century. The complex includes a monumental entrance, a large audience hall, and various other rooms. The villa is best known for its huge series of elaborate mosaics, which are among the best preserved of their kind. These are regarded as the largest, richest, and most varied collection of Roman mosaics ever found. The complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
