Vallagarina, Valle dell’Adige, and Valsugana

The Adige river crosses Trentino from north to south, creating a large valley known as Valle dell’Adige. At the center of this valley is Trento, while the southernmost part is called Vallagarina and includes the town of Rovereto. East of Trento is Valsugana, a beautiful valley crossed by the Brenta river.

Avio

Avio is a town at the southern end of Trentino, bordering Veneto and located along the Adige river between Monte Baldo and Monti Lessini. It was a regionally important fortress in the Late Middle Ages.

Avio Castle

The Avio Castle is a fortification located on a hill overlooking Sabbionara, near Avio. It was built in the 11th century and expanded in the 15th century by the Venetians. It is one of the most important castles in the area and its halls house an interesting series of medieval frescoes.

Rovereto

Rovereto is the second largest city of Trentino, located at the center of Vallagarina south of Trento. Born as a fortress town during the Middle Ages, it developed as a cultural center in the Early Modern period, becoming famous also for the production of silk. Rovereto joined Italy after World War I, during which it was near the frontline. Now Rovereto is one of the most important industrial and cultural centers in the region.

✪ Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, or MART (Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto), is an important art museum with its main halls located in Rovereto, while the section in Trento is represented by the Civic Gallery of Trento. The museum is housed in a modern building and it hosts one of the largest collections in Italy of 20th-century artworks, and it often hosts exhibitions.

Rovereto Castle

The Rovereto Castle is a medieval fortification located on a hill dominating over the city. The castle was built during the 15th century by the Venetians, expanding a previous fortress. At that time, it was one of the most prominent castles in the area, but it gradually lost its importance. Now the castle hosts the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra, a large military museum housing weapons, objects, and memorabilia that span from the Napoleonic Wars to World War II.

Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero

Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero is a museum of futurist art founded by artist Fortunato Depero. It hosts a wide collection of works by the artist, and it is a rare example of museum entirely dedicated to futurism.

Civic Museum of Rovereto

The Civic Museum of Rovereto (Museo Civico di Rovereto) hosts a varied collection divided into sections focused on archaeology, natural sciences, zoology, numismatics, and more. The museum also houses a planetarium and it includes an astronomical observatory on nearby Monte Zugna.

Campana dei Caduti

Also known as: Maria Dolens

The Campana dei Caduti is one of the largest swinging bells in the world and it is located on a hill dominating over Rovereto. It serves as a war memorial and a shrine of peace.

Castel Dante War Memorial

The Castel Dante War Memorial (Sacrario Militare di Castel Dante) is a monumental ossuary located on a hill overlooking Rovereto. It was built in the 1930s and it hosts the remains of thousands of fallen World War I soldiers.

Besenello

Besenello is a small town in Trentino, located close to the Adige river between Trento and Rovereto. Located among a beautiful environment, it is best known for the nearby castle.

Castel Beseno

Castel Beseno is the largest fortified complex of Trentino, located on top of a hill near the town of Besenello. The castle, erected in the 12th century, host various frescoes and artworks, and its dominant position offers a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.

Valsugana

Valsugana is a valley in Trentino crossed by the Brenta river and located east of Trento. The area was inhabited since ancient times and was contested for centuries, becoming a site for castles and forts, but now it is a popular destination for tourists. The main town in the valley is Borgo Valsugana.

Arte Sella

Arte Sella is an open-air exhibition of contemporary artworks in the hills around Borgo Valsugana. As part of Arte Sella, various works of modern art and land art are located around historic mountain dwellings in the forests of Valsugana, and the area also hosts concerts and events.

San Michele all’Adige

San Michele all’Adige is a town in Trentino located along the Adige river, north of Trento. The town developed around a monastery in the Middle Ages, and it is noted for its agrarian tradition.

Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina

The Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina is an ethnographic museum showcasing the unique culture and traditions of Trentino, and it is one of largest ones of its kind in Italy. It houses large collections of objects and artworks related to local life. The museum is hosted in a former monastery adjacent to the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which features a monumental Baroque facade.

Molveno
