Alghero is a city located on the Mediterranean Sea in Northwestern Sardinia. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, but the city was only founded in the 12th century, and quickly grew to become one of the main centers in the region. After being taken by the Aragonese, many people from Catalonia came to live in Alghero, and the Catalan language still survives here to this day. Alghero is now a tourist destination with various historic attractions, known for its Catalan community.
Alghero Cathedral
The Alghero Cathedral is the main church of the city located in the middle of the old town. The church was built in Catalan Gothic style during the 16th century, and was later reworked with the addition of a large Neoclassical facade. The church features various artworks and decorations, and is also known for its imposing 16th-century bell tower.

Walls of Alghero
The old town of Alghero, located on the sea, is still mostly surrounded by a series of ancient fortifications. Most of the fortifications were built during the period of Aragonese and Spanish domination over the city, and include several bastions and towers along the coast and overlooking the sea.

Church of San Francesco
The Church of San Francesco is a historic church in the old town of Alghero. The church was built in Catalan Gothic style between the 15th and 16th century, and features an imposing structure. Various artworks and decorations are housed inside the church.

Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju
The Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju is an ancient necropolis located in the countryside north of Alghero. This is the largest pre-Nuragic necropolis in Sardinia, and houses numerous prehistoric tombs dating between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Several archaeological findings have been unearthed here.

Nuragic Complex of Palmavera
The Nuragic Complex of Palmavera (Complesso Nuragico di Palmavera) is an archaeological site located west of Alghero. This prehistoric village was built by the Nuragic civilization starting from the 15th century BCE, and was inhabited until the 8th century BCE. The complex includes a central fortified structure surrounded by various other buildings.

Porto Conte

Neptune’s Grotto
