Marche is a region of Italy located along the Adriatic coast in the center of the country, mostly occupied by hills and mountains. Anciently inhabited by Italic peoples, it was later conquered by the Romans, while during the Middle Ages it was divided between different powers and many comuni. During the Renaissance, the region was a rich center of arts and culture, especially in the Duchy of Urbino that ruled the north of Marche. The entire region was later under the domain the Papal States, except for a brief period during the Napoleonic Wars, and became part of Italy when the country was unified. Marche is known for its medieval and Renaissance towns among the hills and along the coast, and features a rich cultural heritage. Many tourists also visit the region for its beautiful beaches and natural areas.
