Umbria is a landlocked region in Central Italy, tucked between Tuscany, Marche, and Lazio. Its territory is characterized by valleys located among hills and mountains, and it hosts the fourth largest lake in Italy, Lake Trasimeno. In ancient times the region was inhabited by the Umbri and the Etruscans, which were later conquered by the Romans. In the Early Middle Ages, Umbria was divided between the Byzantines and the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, and later saw the rise of various comuni. The region eventually came under the rule of the Papal States, joining Italy when the country was unified. Umbria is now known for its scenic beauty, medieval and Renaissance towns, rich historic and artistic heritage, and famous religious sites.
