Canavese is a historical region in the north of the Metropolitan City of Turin. The area is occupied by hills and mountains, and includes the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater, a relief of glacial origin. The main city in this region is Ivrea, but various other smaller towns also offer interesting landmarks.
Ivrea
Ivrea is a city located north of Turin, and the most important center in the historic region of Canavese. The town was founded around the 5th century BCE by the Salassi, and it was later a Roman city known as Eporedia. During the Middle Ages, Ivrea was the capital of a Lombard duchy and later a free comune, before coming under the rule of the Savoy family. In the early 20th century Ivrea became an important industrial center, hosting the headquarters of typewriter manufacturer Olivetti. Ivrea is also famous for its carnival, which features organized groups throwing oranges at each other.
Ivrea Cathedral
Also known as: Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The Ivrea Cathedral (Duomo di Ivrea) is the main religious building in the city. It was erected during the Middle Ages in Romanesque style, replacing a previous church, and it was later reworked. The church features two bell towers and a Neoclassical facade, and it houses numerous interesting art pieces. The cathedral also features a crypt adorned with ancient frescoes and hosting a Roman sarcophagus.

Ivrea Castle
The Ivrea Castle is a medieval fortress erected in the 14th century in Ivrea. Over the following centuries, the castle was an important fortification and a residence of the Savoy family. The castle was used as a prison from the 18th century until 1970.

Piazza Ferruccio Nazionale
Also known as: Piazza di Città
Piazza Ferruccio Nazionale is the main square in Ivrea, dominated by the 18th-century Palazzo di Città, the historic city hall of the town, standing on the southern side. The medieval Romanesque Church of Sant’Ulderico is instead located at the northern end of the square.

Civic Museum Pier Alessandro Garda
The Civic Museum Pier Alessandro Garda (Museo Civico Pier Alessandro Garda) is an archaeology and art museum in Ivrea. Its collection hosts various archaeological findings from the pre-Roman, Roman, and medieval period, along with some interesting Renaissance artworks. The museum also features a section focused on East Asian art.

Torre di Santo Stefano
The Torre di Santo Stefano is a medieval tower in Ivrea, standing inside the public park Giardini Giustiana near the Dora Baltea river. It was erected in the 11th century as the bell tower of a former abbey, now demolished. The medieval Torre dei Tallianti is located nearby.

Church of San Bernardino
The Church of San Bernardino is a medieval church and convent erected in the 15th century at the southern outskirts of Ivrea, next to the Complesso Olivetti. The church features a rich series of Renaissance frescoes painted by Giovanni Martino Spanzotti.

Complesso Olivetti
The Complesso Olivetti is a series of buildings erected since the late 19th century by the Olivetti group in Ivrea. The area includes historic factories, office buildings, and the Unità Residenziale Ovest, a residential building completed in 1971 and also known as Talponia. A historical archive with many documents on the company is also located in the same area. A series of panels explaining the history of the complex are located around the area, and make up the Open-Air Museum of Modern Architecture (Museo a Cielo Aperto dell’Architettura Moderna). The Complesso Olivetti has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2018.

Bollengo
Bollengo is a small town located at the foot of the hills east of Ivrea in the Metropolitan City of Turin.
Ciucarun
Also known as: Bell Tower of San Martino (Campanile di San Martino)
The Ciucarun is the only remaining structure of the medieval hamlet of Paerno. This Romanesque bell tower was erected in the 11th or 12th century as part of a church, but the site was later abandoned and demolished in the 18th century. However, the tower was spared and it still stands today in the countryside north of Bollengo.

Caravino
Caravino is a small town located south of Ivrea in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is known for the historic castle in the nearby hamlet of Masino.
Masino Castle
The Masino Castle is a historic fortified palace located on a hill overlooking Caravino. The castle was originally erected in the 11th century but it was later reworked various times, turning it into a noble residence inhabited by the Valperga family. The palace houses numerous frescoed halls and artworks, and it is surrounded by a park. The castle also hosts a rich museum of historic carriages.

Agliè is a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, best known for hosting an impressive castle which was once among the royal residences of the Savoy family.
Ducal Castle of Agliè
The Ducal Castle of Agliè (Castello Ducale di Agliè) is a former noble residence of the Savoy family. It originated as a medieval castle, which was later turned into a fortified palace and reworked several times. The castle features a monumental facade and it is surrounded by a park. The interior includes various richly adorned halls.

Valperga
Valperga is a small town located at the foot of the hills north of Turin, best known for hosting in its territory one of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy.
Sacro Monte di Belmonte
The Sacro Monte di Belmonte is one of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, a series of religious sites built on top of hills and mountains across the two regions. The sanctuary is located on a hill near Valperga and it was erected between the 17th and 18th century over a previous church. The site hosts a few artworks and offers a great view of the surrounding area.

San Benigno Canavese
San Benigno Canavese is a town located north of Turin, known since the Middle Ages for hosting a historic abbey.
Fruttuaria Abbey
The Fruttuaria Abbey (Abbazia di Fruttuaria) is a monastery founded in 1003 in San Benigno Canavese. During the Late Middle Ages it was one of the most powerful abbeys in Europe, possessing numerous churches throughout Italy, Austria, and Germany, and hosting over 1,000 monks. However, its importance later declined and the monastery was suppressed in 1585. The complex has now been restored and it features a Romanesque church and a few medieval mosaics.

Chivasso
Chivasso is a city located along the Po river northeast of Turin. The town emerged in the Middle Ages, and it was the capital of the March (and later Marquisate) of Montferrat until the 15th century, before becoming a possession of the Savoy family. During the 20th century, Chivasso became an industrial center.

The church was erected during the 15th century in Late Gothic style, and it features a facade decorated with numerous reliefs, while the interior hosts various artworks.
