Nuoro

Nuoro is a city located among the mountains of central-eastern Sardinia. Inhabited since ancient times, Nuoro emerged a small village in the Middle Ages, and slowly grew to become the main center in the area. The city now houses a few historic attractions and various museums.

Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve

The Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve is the main church of Nuoro. The church was built in Neoclassical style during the 19th century to replace a previous smaller building, and houses a few artworks and decorations.

National Archaeological Museum of Nuoro

The National Archaeological Museum of Nuoro (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Nuoro) is an archaeological museum in Nuoro. Its collection includes numerous archaeological findings unearthed in the territory around the city, spanning a period prehistory and the Middle Ages. The museum also houses various paleontological findings dating from the Pleistocene.

Art Museum of the Province of Nuoro

The Art Museum of the Province of Nuoro (Museo d’Arte della Provincia di Nuoro) is an art gallery in Nuoro. The museum is mostly dedicated to Sardinian artists, and features several works of modern and contemporary art. The museum often hosts temporary exhibitions.

Spazio Ilisso

Spazio Ilisso is an exhibition space in Nuoro. Its permanent collection is dedicated to 20th-century Sardinian sculpture, but the museum also houses temporary art exhibitions and a digital archive of historic photographs.

Su Gologone

Su Gologone is a natural karst spring located on the side of a mountain near Oliena. This spring serves as an outflow for a long underground river, and it is the largest site of its kind in Sardinia. Su Gologone is also a popular tourist destination.

Dorgali

Dorgali is a small town located among the mountains near the eastern coast of Sardinia. Its large territory includes various archaeological sites and a seaside resort.

Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone is a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Sardinia, in the municipality of Dorgali. The town is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches, but also for the various caves located along the coastline, most notably the Grotte del Bue Marino. The town also hosts the Cala Gonone Aquarium (Acquario di Cala Gonone), which houses various marine creatures from the Mediterranean Sea and also other parts of the world.

Nuraghe Mannu

The Nuraghe Mannu is an ancient nuragic complex located south of Cala Gonone, near the coast. The complex was built during the Bronze Age, with a main tower surrounded by an ancient village. Various archaeological findings have been unearthed here.

S’Abba Frisca Park Museum

The S’Abba Frisca Park Museum (Parco Museo S’Abba Frisca) is an ethnographic museum located in the countryside east of Dorgali. The museum houses various exhibitions on local traditions and culture, and it is surrounded by a beautiful park.

Nuragic Complex of Serra Orrios

The Nuragic Complex of Serra Orrios (Complesso Nuragico di Serra Orrios) is an archaeological site located northwest of Dorgali. The complex includes the ruins of a prehistoric village built by the Nuragic civilization during the Bronze Age.

Ispinigoli Cave

The Ispinigoli Cave (Grotta di Ispinigoli) is a cave located north of Dorgali. The cave can be visited and features various peculiar rock formations. Various archaeological findings have been unearthed in the cave.

Giants’ Grave of S’Ena’e Thomes

The Giants’ Grave of S’Ena’e Thomes (Tomba dei Giganti di S’Ena e Thomes) is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Dorgali. The site includes a large tomb built during the Bronze Age by the Nuragic civilization, one of the most notable examples of this kind of structure.

Archaeological Area of Mount Tiscali

The Archaeological Area of Mount Tiscali (Area Archeologica del Monte Tiscali) is an archaeological site located on a mountain near Dorgali. The site includes the ruins of a prehistoric village built by the Nuragic civilization during the Bronze Age and inhabited until the Roman period.

Orosei

Orosei is a town located next to the eastern coast of Sardinia in the Province of Nuoro. Inhabited since ancient times, the town emerged as a small regional center in the Late Middle Ages, and it is now a popular summer destination.

Beaches of Orosei

Fonte Sacra Su Tempiesu

The Fonte Sacra Su Tempiesu is an ancient monument located near Orune. This was a sanctuary built by the Nuragic civilization around the 13th century BCE, and buried by a landslide in the 9th century BCE. Found in 1953, the site has now been excavated and it can be visited.

Bitti

Bitti is a small town located among the mountains north of Nuoro, in the historical region of Barbagia. The town is best known for a nearby archaeological site.

Su Romanzesu

The Su Romanzesu is an ancient nuragic complex and archaeological site near Bitti. The site includes a Bronze Age village, with an amphitheater, some temples, a holy well, and various other structures. The village was inhabited between the 14th and 7th century BCE.

Orani

Orani is a small town located among the mountains west of Nuoro. The town has been inhabited since ancient times, and it is known for hosting an important museum.

Nivola Museum

The Nivola Museum (Museo Nivola) is a sculpture museum dedicated to local 20th-century artist Costantino Nivola, hosted in an ancient wash-house. The museum houses a collection of works by Nivola, and often hosts temporary exhibitions on contemporary art.
